Factors determining bryophyte species richness and community composition on insular siliceous erratic boulders in calcareous landscapes

چکیده
Aim Pleistocene erratic boulders are rocks that were relocated by glaciers during the Ice Ages. When their geology differs from of landscape surrounds them, form habitat islands for regionally rare, edaphically specialised, rock-dwelling cryptogams (bryophytes, ferns and lichens). Such constitute terrestrial model systems exploring island biogeographic predictions effect environmental variables on species diversity community composition, which we studied in order to provide basic knowledge ecology, with relevance conservation, these unusual systems. Location Siliceous calcareous Swiss Plateau Jura Mountains. Methods For 160 recorded all bryophyte a diverse set variables. specialist (acidophile rock-dwellers) separately, analysed species–area relationships nestedness, explored between variables, composition. Results We found 138 species, 19 specialists boulders. A steeper curve boulder than total richness underlined properties species. Large more likely harbour numerous communities small nested within present large However, at level contributed few same surface area. Erratic near settlements less specialists. Boulders open land harboured different forests. Conclusions undisturbed rare number Conservation should thus prioritise this type Furthermore, conserving is logistically easier, they may function as flagships also contribute biodiversity landscapes.

Bryophyte Species Richness on Retention Aspens Recovers in Time but Community Structure Does Not
Green-tree retention is a forest management method in which some living trees are left on a logged area. The aim is to offer 'lifeboats' to support species immediately after logging and to provide microhabitats during and after forest re-establishment. Several studies have shown immediate decline in bryophyte diversity after retention logging and thus questioned the effectiveness of this method...
متن کاملBryophyte Species Richness and Composition along an Altitudinal Gradient in Gongga Mountain, China
An investigation of terrestrial bryophyte species diversity and community structure along an altitudinal gradient from 2,001 to 4,221 m a.s.l. in Gongga Mountain in Sichuan, China was carried out in June 2010. Factors which might affect bryophyte species composition and diversity, including climate, elevation, slope, depth of litter, vegetation type, soil pH and soil Eh, were examined to unders...
متن کاملEndozoochory by slugs can increase bryophyte establishment and species richness
Herbivory can aff ect plant community composition and diversity by removing biomass and reducing light competition. Herbivory may particularly benefi t low growing species such as bryophytes, which are frequently limited by light competition. Gastropods are important herbivores of seed plants and cryptogams, furthermore, they can disperse propagules such as seeds and spores via endozoochory. Ho...
متن کاملHow to describe species richness patterns for bryophyte conservation?
A large amount of data for inconspicuous taxa is stored in natural history collections; however, this information is often neglected for biodiversity patterns studies. Here, we evaluate the performance of direct interpolation of museum collections data, equivalent to the traditional approach used in bryophyte conservation planning, and stacked species distribution models (S-SDMs) to produce rel...
متن کاملThe effect of energy and seasonality on avian species richness and community composition.
We analyzed geographic patterns of richness in both the breeding and winter season in relation to a remotely sensed index of seasonal production (normalized difference vegetation index [NDVI]) and to measures of habitat heterogeneity at four different spatial resolutions. The relationship between avian richness and NDVI was consistent between seasons, suggesting that the way in which available ...
